We just returned home from charleston race week, and are quite proud of Team Rocksteady’s performance. We placed 11th out of 31, and continued to climb each day cranking out a majority of single digit races the last two days. The highlight of our twilight was the last day, last race. We pulled a nostalgic and “steel balls” -alan block move and crushed the start by port tacking the entire fleet, crossing the first boats by over 20 boat lengths.

Team Rock Steady headed down to Miami to take part in Miami Bacardi Sailing Week, looking forward to some sunshine and great sailing. While the weather didn’t cooperate too much we did get in some good sailing. The team consisted of Seth as tactician, Beth on the bow, Ed trimming the kite and jib and Becky doing a little bit of everything.

We came out strong on day 1 with 2, 2, 3 finishes, putting us 1 point out of 1st. Day 2 was cut short due to an impending storm and we only got off 1 race unfortunately had a 6th place finish and were sitting 3rd after day 2. Going into day 3 we knew we had to have some killer races to keep our top 3 ranking but had some difficulties with winds blowing around 25mph and finished the day with a 7, 7, 7 and ended up 5th overall. We had some great team work and are improving and learning with every event, we just need to get our windy game on point and we will be set! Bacardi put on a great event with some great parties and we are looking forward to an even bigger turn out next year. Thanks again to Becky and Ed from Sail22 for some great sailing and as always big thanks to Seth and Beth.

Rock Steady is en route to Charleston where it will be stored until Charleston Race Week next month.

Rocksteady is now resting is Miami till the Bacardi Cup in Coconut Groove next month. We are hoping for some more traditional weather down in Miami this time.

Charleston is always a fun event especially when your on a freakin conveyor belt. We kicked the regatta off super strong with a 2nd in the first race and then a near bullet in the second race, just got poked out by David Dabney and crew but we were happy with our 2nd. The next two races brought us a little bit of a challenge as winds started to crank up a bit, we lost some of our game and decided to go shrimping instead of sailing apparently. Somehow the good old faithful Cre843 kite hung in there and got us some good mid fleet finishes despite the bad sets. We were still happy with the day as we had really good pace on all the boats, and rounded almost every mark top 3. Going into day 2 we were 2 points out of second with our larger drop. So we all knew it was very possible to do what we needed to do.

After a little debriefing over taco boy that evening, we decided we need to come out day 2 with dual guns shooting like we just robbed a freakin bank and shut the door on anyone remotely close to us. That we did, we busted out 2,3,2 and called it a regatta.

Unfortunately there was a little drama on the course with a few of the competitors not playing by the rules and ultimately being faced with the raft of having to withdraw from the event, which bumped a few of our scores even higher. We were very happy with the 2nd place overall finish, and congratulations to John Lucus and Steve Kopf for also placing top 3. Steve and Chris Hamilton put on a hell of a regatta and really made it a point for fair game, which is what it’s all about right?

We pulled a all nighter and just got back to the port at about 10am this morning. Thanks to Cameron, Jeff, Seth, and of course wonderful wife Beth for kicking some ass out there and out hiking every one on the course. From here, we are on Hiatus, a little waterline systems keel repairs and then Rocksteady is off to worlds without us..=( Good luck to her, and the great team that has the privilege of using her.

Here are the final results.

http://www.regattanetwork.com/clubmgmt/applet_regatta_results.php?regatta_id=2369

This boat is for sale for 2.8 mil currently and the owner is looking to buy the old Puma to campaign. Quite a sweet deal. Anyway, super glad to have our long lost brother back here in Newport.

Circumstances prevent us for the week long event in Annapolis however, we will be tuning with the Quantum Newport Boat up here in Newport all summer, once a week. We also will be chartering Rocksteady out to the very talented Melges 24 Legend Andrea Racchelli on Altea. So far the tuning sessions have been going quite well, it’s really given us the time we need in the boat for a change.

The best part is we can finally stop and think about what we do as a unit on the boat and what really makes this thing go fast. Usually we never get this opportunity in the circuit so were taking some time to find out a little more about the boat. Newport boosts some crazy great breeze in the summertime months which works out great since that tends to be our weaker area on the race course. After these tune up sessions, we’ll be taking Rocksteady back to waterline systems for some final “touch ups” and dry out before worlds.

We recently finished the Coastal Living Regatta hosted by Sail Newport in our home town. Overall, very successful as we move up in the ranks of this ever so talent filled fleet. We managed to stay in the top 5 the entire regatta, duking it out with incredible talent from the likes of Scott Nixon, Henry Filter, Simon Strauss, Alan Field, Chris Larson, and John Mollicone. Unfortunately we kinda tuned out the last day gave a few points away to a still very good 9th place overall. Congratulations to Scott Nixon on the Quantum Boat on their win.
